Other people's children do not belong to you.

My children do not belong to the government.

I have a right to raise my children as I see fit whether I send them to Harvard at the age of 15 or public school, it's not up to anyone but the parents of the children to raise them.

What are we coming to when people suggest it should be illegal to raise your own children? Nathan D

Yes, there are all those issues to be considered. Different states have different laws on how homeschools work and how much the government is involved. But, many kids have a wonderful experience and good education with homeschooling. Some homeschools are actually like very small private schools with the parents (many teachers or professionals in what they are teaching) teaching the children in small groups.

I think the school district should oversee homeschooling, to make sure the kids are getting an education. I believe there is quite a bit of oversight and standardized testing in many states. Unfortunately, many abused kids attend public schools and no adult seems to notice, so of course that could go on in homeschooling. I'd guess the school district would actually look harder for abuse with homeschoolers.

My son has friends that are homeschooled because they are actors. I can't say that they are getting any worse an education than if they attended their local public schools and some received an excellent education and went off to top colleges.

(My son attends a private prep school.) maliboo_girl

you can not know about abuse the child must show continued progress to be home schooled they are required to have testing at intervals to show progress. Hate and intolerance's can be taught in any home even with public schooling. Some children do better in home schooling than in public schools they just do not fit the mold for times to be in classes and they just do not do well with other kids. Some are just too social and can not settle down to work others can not stand the ones that can not settle down.
I asked this same question. My mom's answer to me was that when schooling first started it was initiated by parents. They chose the smartest parent to teach each child and that was school. So our education system was started by parents who taught at home.

I see your point that allowing it now is outdated but home schooled students are still subject to state testing. And in some situations (like when the child is being brutally bullied and verbally abused at school by peers) it is in the best interest of the child to be taught at home.

And I know plenty of students that attend public schools that are still being indoctrinated with hate and intolerance when they come home from school (I actually dated one of them big mistake)

You do make a good argument though I bet soon it will not be allowed. Surfer Chick =)

YO lori dont diss home schooling. People say or think that they dont get as good of an education in home schooling. This is not true. In a recent study by E.R.I.C. or Educational Resources Information Center and funded by the office of educational Research and improvement, and the U.S. Department of Education, homeschool student achievement test scores were exceptionally high. The median scores for every subtest at every grade were well above those of Public and Catholic/private-school students. SO HA! its true and im in homeschooling and im doing great so can it! Jesse
