No, I don't homeschool. The public schools here are good, but if they weren't, I would probably homeschool, although I'm a middle/highschool teacher, so I don't know all that much about all the subjects and I feel that a regular school would do a better job with some subjects than I ever could, especially with math, since my oldest son is in a gifted program and already knows more math at age 10 than I ever did.
The only reason I would homeschool is because the public system was seriously lacking (I would never send them to a private school). But that school would have to be seriously, seriously lacking, because currently my kids just skip ahead a grade, and that works out fine. They can learn more in a higher level class than they could from me, when it comes to certain subjects. T P

I think it's okay, as long as you don't try to shelter them from the real world and let them participate in sports and stuff so that they can still be with other kids their age. Hannah

if you had or have experience as a teacher or in child development and education i say y not? as long as you also make play dates cause i believe children need to also learn social skills and to see how others are different in the world. personally i wouldnt do it cause i am sure i wont be good at it and i want my son to have friends at school, socialize and see how others are physically, culturally, personalities etc...most importantly i want him to be exceptionally educated by professionals. goodluck on that Trinity

Some parents (like me) aren't cut out for it, while others are great at it and you'll find good and bad experiences with both. As long as you have the patience and give your child a chance to socialize with other kids their age, they'll be fine with home schooling. pandabear

Well, I feel a little of a lot with it. I was homeschooled for some of my high school years. I liked the fact that I could do it when I got up. And it helped when I had a job, because unlike the other teens I could stay later and work earlier. That is definatly a plus. The thing I didn't like though, is if I wouldn't have had a job, I would have had no friends. I stayed in the house all of the time, alone, the only friends that I had, where people that just so happend to talk to me on the street if I walked around. I hated it. Now at the age of 21 I still act 15 years old, because thats the age I last had people my age until just recently to hang out with. britthebrat15

Reminds me of that girl that arrived at my high school after being home-schooled all her life. She cried and wailed "Mommyyyyyy", tried to escape, kicked teachers who restrained her, etc...
It lasted for about a month. I felt sorry for her. Academically, she was up to our level but always behaved like she had been living in a cave. It took her a couple of years to make friends and starting behaving like a teenager. Not a sweetie

I would not do it, because i think your kids will lose out on a lot of experiences, like school dances making friends sports...etc. you get the idea TTC #1

I am honestly thinking about homeschooling too! I have been talking to people about it that do homeschool..I hate it when people say your children will be socially deprived..that is not true if you have your kids in sports, church or other social gatherings..My boys now are in soccer and church and they are around other kids often..my oldest son is in preschool..its a christian preschool..my boys are 4 and 3 and i am pregnant with baby #3 so I have to decide soon my oldest will be starting kindergarden next year...good luck to your decision..I think its a good decision to homeschool.. Dylan Ethans Mom Lillian due feb

I am home schooling for the first time, my 5th grader. It is called "accidental home schooling" because I never planned it. He has had some issues over the years at the public school that is supposed to be the best school in the best zone in the best district in our town, and frankly it STILL is lacking where he is concerned. My daughter has had no problems, but my son....I just finally got to the point where I wanted better for him.

Since I am new to this I am not sure that this is better, but I had to give it a try and so far we spend about 1.5 hours of one-on-one every day and then about 2 hours of independent assignments (give or take).

Since one of my goals is to help him with his least favorite subjects (reading & writing) it takes us MORE time than perhaps a typical home school.

I think home school can be great! I also think home school can be a negative thing if you (the parent & teacher) are not a go-getter or motivated on some level.

FYI: My stepkids have both been homeschooled to some degree (not by me) and they have both had positive experiences. reddevilbloodymary
