The cure for school problems: Home Study rather than going to a regular school. By competent persons. Agree?

home school problem
ZORRO asked:

If any competent parent or family member or other, has the educational teaching abilities to do this, it should be done, at least the elementary school level. You would use the same text books or similar ones to teach the kids. At the middle and ending of each grade level, they are tested by a local school official before passing to the next grade. What’s your educational opinion on this matter?

ideally it would work, but how many people are able to teach?

look at society; it reflects on the learning.
keep your kids in private/public schools unless you’re an extreme genius with good social skills spartanerik

Homeschooling is great and very successful. Most families can’t afford to have a person staying at home teaching because they aren’t earning a wage. Maybe this needs to change and you could help create a world where parents can get paid to teach their children. BonesofaTeacher

If the person was capable of doing so then yes. My only thought is that where does the socializing take place? There is something in schools called hidden curriculum that students who are homeschooled might miss. Some of these things are bad, but some are good too like socializing. That’s the only beef I have. DZlady

I think that any competent parent can homeschool, whether or not they had teaching experience/training. I also think that using public school curriculum defeats much of the purpose of homeschooling for many people. Homeschoolers, in general, finish school with a better education than public school student and they don’t usually get that education by using the same material that is used in government schools. trinitytough

Agreed, accept my definition of competent might be different. I believe any parent who can read a book, is willing to relearn what they forgot or didn’t get from school the first time around, and are willing to find help if they don’t know how to do something, is competent enough to homeschool. And, I don’t feel it should matter where the curriculum comes from, as long as it teaches them what they need to learn. The beauty of homeschooling is the flexibility to work with the individuals learning style and abilities, and that’s something that school textbooks are not designed to do. And, I don’t agree with the local school official being involved. They lose money if everyone homeschools, so they have too much invested to be involved with homeschoolers. But, I would agree to a mediator who doesn’t have anything invested other than the child’s best interest, but there isn’t anything like that in our society. Socializing isn’t even an issue, although most people who don’t know better think so.The type of socializing kids get in school is NOT like the real world, at all. Shoot, if we were as boy/girl crazy as kids in school are, and as dramatic, we wouldn’t survive as adults! Homeschooling teaches the RIGHT kind of socialization, AFTER the schoolwork is done, through things like church, boy scouts/girl scouts, city band programs and other recreational programs through the city like sports. And, they have more time for it. The only reason why kids have to be in school for 8 hours is 1. for SOCIALIZATION, and 2., it’s a glorified babysitting service for parents who can’t handle being with their kids all day. Imagine how smart our kids would be if they spent all 8 hours studying instead of passing notes, spreading rumors, and fighting? Our kids would be able to graduate by 8th grade. But then, what on earth would parents do with them then? On the other hand, when you’re homeschooled, you’re done with your work in about 3 hours then the rest of the day is yours. How cool is that?! I wish I had been homeschooled, honestly. Angie
