I am starting to home-school my six year old this year and want to make sure I am following the laws in Texas. I know “unschooling” is a form of homeschooling and there is not a law against it, but I need to know how to go about “unschooling” when according to TX laws, a written curriculum must be followed. How does one accomplish this?

I want to begin a home schooling program for my children, but don’t know where to begin drawing up a curriculum. Can anyone help me out?
Thanks to everyone who answered. I am a father of 2 but currently living in South Korea, which does not have such a great educational system. I began teaching the basics to my kids aged 5 and 7 instead of kindergarten, and am looking for some basic guidelines.

Thanks so much to all who answered.

North asked:

We are a home school family with three kids. We are in the process of choosing electives for next year. Do you now or have you ever included Latin in your curriculum? If so, does your family enjoy it and have you found it to be of any use? If not, do you have any suggestions for a good academic elective. We already include French.

Frustrated Parent asked:

As the non-custodial parent of two boys (14 & 15 years old), I am frustrated to say the least, that they are not receiving a proper education.

Their mother moved them to Missouri and is “home schooling” them now. All that I receive is a lame excel version of a yearly report card. I have repeatedly asked to be provided with a copy of their curriculum and have been denied each time.

Aside from going back to court to make it happen. Can anyone tell me what would be involved in converting them back to a public school enrollment? I am not even certain if their homeschooling grades will even be considered when it comes time to determine what grade to place them in?

If anyone has experience with this please reply back.
Update - In the State of Missouri “registration” of home schooled students is not mandatory. I have a court order that states that I am entitled to full access to all school records but conveniently they are not registered in any district. Or if they are it is under a different last name.

Their mother has not complied with my requests to show their work or their lesson plans.

Susan T asked:

I am thinking about home-schooling my children, ages 7 and 11, and I know there are different curriculum’s for homeschool. I don’t know where to go to find out about homeschooling resources or how to compare the different programs. In addition, what resources are available to home-school parents? How can you suplement the social aspects, art, PE, and other programs offered in school. I would like to find the program that is right for my children and encorporate all of the additional activities to create a well rounded education for them.

What is the transition from home school to public school like?

Susan asked:

I’m writing a story, and one of my characters has been home schooled all her life and, due to her mother’s career change, has to start public high school as a freshman. Does the curriculum differ? How does one adapt to the social structure of public school? Do home schooled kids ever feel “sheltered” compared to their public school counterparts? I would appreciate help from anyone who has gone through a similar transition.
