Can you transfer home school credits to public school?

I am from Farmington NM and was wondering what the laws regarding credit transfer are. I am part of an accredited home school program called Kolbe Academy, and I’m in 11th grade. I plan on going to public school for my senior year, but I don’t want to have to start high school over again (obviously). So will the credits that I’ve earned in home schooling count toward a public school diploma?

Homeschool policies are different in every state and district. It is best to contact the school and find out what their specific requirements are. Some schools are very friendly and welcoming to homeschoolers, and others are rather disdainful and uncooperative. Some will accept your coursework if you can provide a portfolio that documents what you’ve accomplished (reports, tests, pictures of projects, etc) and a complete list of resources that were used, but I’ve known a few principals who would not give credit for courses completed if they didn’t like the curriculum.
Accreditation means little- there are dozens of accrediting agencies out there, so just because a program or school says it is accredited, that might not mean anything if the school you are transferring to is accredited by a different agency than your homeschool program.
Don’t wait to find out what you need in order to enter public school next year- get the kinks worked out now while you have time.

I did a search for Kolbe Academy and it looks like it is based in Napa, CA. I was hoping that it might be accredited by the same regional agency that serves NM, but I could not find a listing. That would have been a big plus for getting everything to transfer smoothly.
But Kolbe does offer a transcript service and so you need to get your transcripts forwarded to the school you want to go to. Make sure your public school has a file open on you first so they know what to do with the transcripts when they arrive. Also, I noticed Kolbe offers the CAT5 test. If you have any scores from the past two years, those would be helpful too. If you have taken the PSAT already and done well, report that too.
It is impossible to answer you for sure one way or another because the administration at the local school does have the authority to either refuse to accept transfer credit or to have you enter on probation. So much is left up to what their attitude is, and if they require placement testing, and if they are willing to interview you. Here is hoping you have an open-minded principal at your public school.
